retort packaging

A retort pouch is a laminated plastic packaging that is thin, lightweight, and flexible and is used to hold processed meals. It's a aluminum can and glass jar alternative that combines the lifetime of traditional food preservation techniques with the convenience and benefits of a thin, pliable container.

Traditional retort food pouches are typically multi-layered, made from a combination of polypropylene (PP), aluminum foil and polyethylene (PET). These materials are used for their durability to withstand high temperatures and pressures from the retort process, ensuring a longer shelf life.

Our thermoforming films for sterilisation- and retort application with medium and high barrier properties, ensure extended shelf life for your products. They offer extremely high oxygen and water vapour barriers and a fast recovery of barrier properties after retorting. The films have an improved sealing strength and provide a perfect fit for the product shape. Our thermoforming films are suitable for pasteurisation, sterilisation, retort and microwave applications.

Retort Pouch

Developed in the 1950s, the retort pouch is a flexible package (pouch, tray, dish, bowl, or cup) that is used in place of the cylindrical metal can or glass jar. A flexible pouch is the most common manifestation, being hermetically sealed on three or four sides and made from one or more layers of plastic or foil, each layer having a specific functionality. The choice of barrier layers, sealant layers and food contact layers depends on the processing conditions, product application and desired shelf life. Typical processing conditions involve temperatures of 121 °C for up to 30 min.
